So this is the prologue to a story I've written about five times, I still can't get it right. It's currently untitled, but I was considering naming it "Fire Starter".
PROLOUGE:
DECEMBER 23RD 2004
I could smell her even before my eyes saw her. There was a sweet scent that hung in the air, one of Lavender and sugar but there was something else too. Something I couldn’t put my finger on. As I ran closer to her, I felt my skin tingle with electricity, it was the first time I had actually felt something since turning nearly two months ago. My heart raced with each step my paws took. I knew I was traveling down a dangerous path, I was supposed to stay with hunting partner but her sent was calling me. As I ran through the woods, I wondered how much trouble I’d be in when I got back. However, once I entered the clearing and saw her, I didn’t care anymore.
She was dancing around a fire, swing back and forth to music that didn’t seem to have a source. I watched her for what seemed hours, but I knew had only been seconds. The fire grew and then dimmed; she turned and looked at me. Her eyes as bright as the fire seemed to pierce my soul. I couldn’t help myself; I shifted right then and there. I tried to smile but I couldn’t. I could feel her eyes gazing over my body; she bit down on her lip, tilted her head to one side and then motioned me forward with one finger. My feet moved, even if my brain hadn’t told them too, it was if she had possessed my body. When I was only a few feet away I stopped moving.
The two of us stood there motionless for several moments, the music was still playing but it too had grown dim, fading like the fire. The girl looked me over, her fiery eyes filled with curiosity. At last she spoke.
“You shouldn’t have broken into my circle, it’s dangerous don’t you know?” Her world felt as sharp as the fire, but at the same time it was as soft as the dying music.
“I-I’m sorry.” I stammered something that never happened to me.
She giggled. “Don’t be, I didn’t bind it…I haven’t learned how too yet.”
“Are you a witch?” I asked the words before my brain could tell me not to.
She only looked at me. “It’s dangerous for you to be talking to me, don’t you know? We are supposed to hate each other, you and I.”
“I don’t care.”
She placed a single pale finger on her lips. She titled her head to the side, and then to the other side. She didn’t say anything, her silence was breaking me, I wanted to hear her speak…I needed to hear her speak.
“Don’t be foolish.” She whispered at last. “You don’t know anything about me.”
“Then I’ll learn.”
She took a deep breath. “What if you don’t like what you learn?”
“Then it’ll be my mistake to carry.” I paused. “What is your name?”
“Why should I give my name to you?” Her words were icy and left my heart aching.
“Please tell me your name?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Why would I?”
I didn’t answer. Why should she tell me her name, she didn’t know me, after all we were supposed to hate each other. Whatever she was, our kind weren’t friendly with each other. I sighed, looking into her eyes. They were brown, a light amber, but they seemed to have a flash of fire with in them….as I were watching the fire reflect into her eyes. I crossed my arms against my bare chest; the night air was turning chilly.
“I don’t know.”
She nodded.
In the distance I heard a single howl, one I knew belonged to my hunting partner. It was coming closer to the clearing. No! I thought, why did she have to follow me? Why of all people did my sister have to be my partner? I turned and looked back towards the way I came. If I didn’t answer her, she’d coming looking but I didn’t want to reply. I turned and looked at the girl. The fire had died along with the music; the only light came from the full moon above. She was frozen in her place with her eyes staring off in the direction I had come. Just before a golden wolf entered the clearing, I heard her whisper her name.
“My name is Evyangeline.”
I turned and looked back to the spot where she was standing, but she was gone along with the bond fire she had created.
